Tell them my friends are kept awake in the dark
Tell them the ones who sleep are on drugs
Tell them my students come to the office crying
Fearing for their love, fearing for their lives
Tell them youth’s eyes show no spark
Tell them we see their evil time machine
Tell them the brains are calculating scape routes
Tell them the shrink’s office is full
Tell them I grit my teeth at night
Tell them we now don't know what to do
Tell them we were doing other things
when they interrupted our dream schemes
We were writing poetry
taking photographs
dancing on the streets
raising humanity in our kids
Tell them they disturbed our love making
and shattered our loving dreams
Still, tell them they won’t be there forever
Tell them they can never ever win
Tell them hatred is always temporary
Tell its pesticide poisoned fruit
is rotten
And will not thrive
And you can tell them
they can hurt us,
tell them we know,
because we love
They can torture us
because we love
They can kill us
because we love
But we will prevail
because we’re love
